the power to change your life | 1st part

The following are some reasons why people make drastic decisions, or seek minor or major changes in their current state or positions:

  • They are exhausted or tired.
  • They are unhappy with their choices and opportunities.
  • They are bored with monotonous routines.

Tired or exhausted?

Like most people with a role to play in the workplace arena, we are expected to do our share of hard work. At some point, working late may become our new norm to keep up with the demands of our jobs.

As such, we may well think that doing the taxing and difficult tasks is the way to stay useful and productive. Before we know it, we have allowed our jobs to ‘control’ us until our bodies ache with stress and fatigue. Sometimes a simple reminder that we all need a breather is all it takes.

  • Evaluate your goals (short-term and long-term) regularly and remove unnecessary functions and tasks that do not contribute to your growth.
  • It’s okay to fail in any of your goals or expectations. You can learn much from your failures.
  • Say no to additional responsibilities (optional, that is) that can weigh you down.
  • Appreciate and reward people for their effort and contributions.
  • Reward yourself for any minor or major accomplishment.
  • Engage in physical activities regularly to stay positive and fit. Take more walks. Go swimming or biking. Some experts say jogging or running as regular activity may not be good for the body; I suggest you check with your healthcare professional.
  • Stay at home more on weekends and get creative. Do some gardening with family. Have fun even as you teach younger ones the right values.
  • Go on an inexpensive picnic or weekend trip with family or friends at least once a month. The diversion from common or everyday setting, such as the park or sunset bay, brings forth new motivation and inspiration.

  • Plan for a long vacation at least once every six months (without unnecessary interruptions). This is a wonderful opportunity to travel to a new place or country. Or else, when in the Philippines, take this chance to explore the beautiful islands nearby or the holiday resorts in your area.

  • Be thankful that you are given the chance to make an impact on the world. There is no such thing as small contribution or small role. Your work is part of something greater than you can imagine.
  • You can’t do everything, so slow down and get enough sleep.

Unhappy with choices and opportunities?

  • Examine the areas where you are unhappy or unsatisfied, and acknowledge your capacity or incapacity to make adjustments to improve your current conditions.
  • Set realistic goals.
  • For students, take up a field of study that you are truly interested in. Chances are that’s where you will do extremely well. When school is over, you should be able to make the best use of the expertise that you acquired or learned.
  • Examine your current set of friends or the people in your immediate circle. Do you associate with winners and people who radiate positive influence for you (and your kids, if you have)? Make as many friends as you can, but choose with whom you most frequently relate.
  • Examine your current line of work. Do you see yourself becoming successful in it while doing what you love? If not, take immediate steps. Leave once you’ve prepared your way for the new course. Follow your purpose and expertise.
  • Examine the government services that you currently benefit from. Do they support your short-term or long-term goals? Wherever you decide to set up house, always seek progress and growth.
  • Do you have adequate insurance coverage? If none, get yourself and your family protected by investing in sound life and health insurance.
  • Invest in mutual funds. Learn about business and how to grow your money.
  • Find ways to help others by joining volunteer activities. When we recognize our capacity to help others, we realize our capacity to turn our unhappiness around.

Bored with monotonous routines?

  • Find ways to simplify – improve, automate, or delegate – your tasks and those of others. You have more time in your hands than you realize.
  • Engage in physical activities regularly to stay positive and fit. Take more walks. Go swimming or biking. Some experts say jogging or running as regular activity may not be good for the body; I suggest you check with your healthcare professional.

  • Welcome diversions from your routine every once in a while. Wake up earlier than usual, take a different route going to school or work, or join volunteer activities on a weekend.
  • Join community organizations and interest groups.
  • Take up a new hobby, e.g., recording your own version of the popular songs. In this day and age, ideas and inspiration are everywhere.
  • Be spontaneous! Take on new adventures. Do some things that scare you. Surprise yourself.
  • Read books.

Have a great, great Today! ;)
